Continuing the legacy of SANAA’s architectural interventions on the island of Inujima in Okayama, Japan, this project involves the redevelopment of the port area where tourists and residents come and go.
A sequence of four canopies, increasing in inclination as they approach the sea, act as a guide for those arriving and departing, while also providing shade for rest and recreation.
Each canopy is supported by a single row of columns to minimize structural interference and maintain freedom of movement. The undersides of the roofs are finished in polished aluminum, reflecting the shimmering water, while the tops are clad in white aluminum tiles that echo the island’s traditional tiled roofs.
A small kayak station is constructed on the beach near the ferry port to encourage visitors to explore the island not only on foot but also by sea. The roof uses the same materials as the canopies, and perforated aluminum sheets divide the interior into spaces for changing rooms and kayak storage.
